What Makes a Novel Great in My Opinion

When I first started reading books, I was drawn to thrillers and mystery novels. The suspense was what appealed to me, and the delivery of that suspense until the very end was crucial. The same goes for all kinds of books; a good novel should engage you from the beginning to the very last page. That's how I know a book is truly great. Happy reading!

Evolving Preferences and Reading Choices

Over time, my taste in books has broadened. I no longer restrict myself to thrillers or mysteries. For instance, while classic authors like Dickens, Trollope, and Joyce are highly regarded by many, I find the works of authors like Hammett, Spillane, and Hemingway more to my liking. The key, as they say, is to read what you enjoy. However, it's equally important to experiment with new authors and genres. Even history and biographies count as genres and can be incredibly enriching.

Engaging Characters and Relatable Themes

Compelling characters, an interesting world, and relatable problems are what make a story truly captivating. Whether you're cheering for a character or hating them, the protagonist should stick with you. I know a book is good when I can't get it out of my head until I've finished it. A great book, however, is one that I can’t stop thinking about days, weeks, or even years later. There are numerous books that were enjoyable but mostly forgotten; a true masterpiece is something that I carry with me, pondering and analyzing the characters long after the reading is finished.

Character and Theme-Worthy Writing

When I wrote my science fiction novel, "Star Blast Game One," I strived to create a compelling story with deep, relatable characters. The plot and the themes ought to connect with the essence of human experience. The smart weaving of events and the themes resonating with human emotions form the foundation of a good story.

The Importance of a Great Story

A novel needs to tell a compelling story above all else. Personally, the bigger the story, the better the novel in my opinion. However, if we look at classic novels and movies, they are all great stories brilliantly told. Therefore, a good story is fundamental to a great novel.

Attributes of a Great Novel

A truly great novel should be captivating, teach us something, be concise, flow well, and open our minds to new concepts. It should also be able to evoke nostalgia or remind us of the past. Utilizing storytelling effectively and causing us to lose track of time are also important. A great book should be something we can gift to others, re-read, and even hit us on an emotional level, making us feel different emotions. These are the elements that make a book a great novel in my opinion.
