Was Aragorn Aware of Gandalf’s True Identity Before Their Meeting at Rivendell?

From the moment Gandalf appeared in Middle-earth, traveling from the West, it was a matter of time before his true identity as a Maia was revealed. Aragorn, being well-versed in the tales and wisdom of his people, would have had ample knowledge to speculate about Gandalf's true origins even before their fateful meeting at Rivendell.

Arwen’s Knowledge of Gandalf’s True Identity

Arwen, being born around the time of Gandalf’s appearance, would have been privy to a wealth of stories from her grandmother, whose living voice would have narrated tales of the early days. The limited origins of powerful, apparently immortal beings sent from the Valar would have hinted at Gandalf’s true identity. Denethor, likewise, would have known about Gandalf, adding another layer of awareness for Arwen.

In J.R.R. Tolkien's books, Arwen plays a lesser role compared to Peter Jackson's film adaptations of The Lord of the Rings. Her character is often seen as a passive beauty, serving as the reward for Aragorn, the noble hero. However, Arwen is a complex figure with deep responsibilities. After her mother, Celebrian, was captured and tortured by orcs, Arwen assumed her role as chatelaine of Rivendell. Despite Elrond’s efforts, she could not find peace, which hints at the complexity of her knowledge and experiences.

Elrond and the Rings of Power

Elrond and Galadriel, two of the most powerful Elves still in Middle-earth, possessed the Three Elven Rings. It is highly likely that Arwen knew or at least suspected this fact. The significance of these rings would have been well-known in Elrond’s household. However, there is no clear indication that Arwen knew that Gandalf possessed the One Ring, which was the key to Sauron's ultimate power.

Arwen’s Meeting with Aragorn

When Arwen met her distant cousin, Aragorn, in Rivendell, she was already more than 2,000 years old. Gandalf, whose true nature as a Maia was well-known among the wise and ancient beings of Middle-earth, arrived in the year 1000 of the Third Age. By the time Arwen was born in the year 241, Gandalf had already been in Middle-earth for nearly 800 years.

Since Gandalf and the other Istari did not age or die, Arwen would have eventually realized that he could not possibly be a mortal Man. Given her understanding of the Maiar’s ability to assume physical form, she would have concluded that Gandalf was a Maia—even without her father or Gandalf telling her directly.

Arwen’s Partial Maia Heritage

There is another possibility that Arwen might have known Gandalf’s true identity due to her own partial Maia heritage. Luthien, Arwen’s great-great-grandmother, was the daughter of Elu Thingol and the Maia Melian. Luthien’s love for Man Beren, their child Dior, and subsequent descendants would have contributed to Arwen’s intricate connections with the Maia. Unless official word from the Tolkien estate rules out this possibility, it is reasonable to speculate that Arwen could have sensed Gandalf’s true nature without being told.

In summary, given the extensive knowledge of Middle-earth’s lore and the unique circumstances of Arwen’s life, it is plausible that Aragorn knew about Gandalf’s true identity before their meeting at Rivendell, either through her own suspicions or through unspoken knowledge passed down through the generations.
