Unseen Struggles: Lifelong Mental Health Therapy and Its Impact

Mental health is a complex and often misunderstood aspect of our lives. Many individuals, like me, have been in therapy for prolonged periods, sometimes even lifelong, to manage conditions such as major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, ADHD, and autism. This journey has led to profound insights into the realities of living with mental health challenges while still functioning in everyday life.

My Journey in Therapy

For the past 56 years, I have been in and out of therapy. Currently, I am on a regular therapy regimen alongside medication for conditions including major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, ADHD, and autism. Despite these diagnoses, I function quite well. I work almost daily, live independently with one of my adult children, have friends, and engage in hobbies and interests. However, there are moments of struggle where I need additional time for myself, but my resilience and supportive network help me bounce back.

Disregarding Stereotypes

It’s common for others to judge my ability based on my appearance rather than acknowledging the unseen battles within. For instance, they may exclaim, "But you don't LOOK like [fill in the diagnosis]!" This statement reflects a lack of understanding of mental health conditions. Similarly, individuals with physical conditions like Type 1 diabetes require ongoing medical treatment and adherence to a strict routine. They manage these challenges with insulin injections and regular medical check-ups, just as I manage my mental health with therapy and medication.

Lifelong Mental Health Therapy

Mental health therapy can indeed be lifelong, especially for those with conditions like bipolar disorder. For me, proper medication keeps my life on track, enabling me to maintain job stability, strong relationships, and a sense of normalcy. When I am on my medication, I present as quite normal and friendly, which is a testament to the effectiveness of therapy and medication.

Challenges and Requires

Not everyone is born with the same capabilities. Some are born with intellectual or physical issues that severely impact their ability to function independently. These issues can range from difficulty understanding and following instructions, to challenges with physical mobility and social interactions. Some individuals with personality disorders may struggle with self-harm or harming others, necessitating intense therapy and sometimes, strict safeguards.

There are many conditions that significantly impair daily functioning, making it necessary for individuals to rely on assisted living or total care facilities. These conditions can interfere with personal care, shopping for necessities, hygiene management, meal preparation, and much more. Maintaining independence in such cases can be a constant challenge, and therapy plays a vital role in managing these conditions to the best of one's ability.

Conclusion

Lifelong mental health therapy is a reality for many individuals. This journey is often a balancing act between struggles and triumphs, and each step of the way, therapy and supportive networks help in navigating these challenges. Understanding and accepting these realities can foster a more inclusive and compassionate society.
