The Story of Brandon Stark, Ned’s Eldest Brother

Nestled within the annals of Westeros, the story of Brandon Stark stands as a prominent figure in the Stark lineage. Born in 262 AC, Brandon Stark was the first-born son of Lord Rickard Stark and Lady Lyarra Stark. He was the eldest, with three siblings: Eddard, Lyanna, and Benjen. But his story is far from the typical tale of a noble heir.

Early Life and Fosterage

Brandon, like many young princes of the realm, was involved in early fosterage. After the death of his uncle Benjen at the Wall, he was sent to Barrowton to study under Lord Dustin. At Barrowton, he was not only a student but also forged a friendship with Lord William Dustin. This period was crucial for Brandon, as he engaged in activities that shaped his character. Detractors labeled him as 'wild,' much like the wolves of his house. His love for riding, a trait that some found wild, was a significant part of his identity.

Political Promises and Betrothals

During his time at Barrowton, Brandon was also betrothed to Lady Catelyn Tully. However, this betrothal was a political move, not one chosen entirely by Brandon or his future spouse. The promise of alliance between the Stark and Tully families was a foundation on which the political balance of Westeros often rested. But, as history shows, not all political marriages were destined to be successful.

Debates and Duels

A notable event in Brandon's life was a duel with Petyr Baelish for the position of Hand of the King. Despite Petyr Baelish's high rhetoric and connections, Brandon, with his greater physical prowess, easily defeated him, as recorded in the annals. Petyr, despite being defeated, managed to persuade Catelyn to spare Brandon's life, a passage of mercy that marked a turning point in their relationship.

Fateful Tournament and Kidnapping

Unfortunately, Brandon's reputation was further tarnished during the Tourney of Harrenhal. Here, he was defeated by none other than the eventual champion, Prince Rhaegar Targaryen. This defeat, combined with an even more tragic event, led to Brandon's downfall. When Prince Rhaegar crowned Lyanna Stark 'Queen of Love and Beauty,' it was a concept too much to bear for Brandon. In his rage, he would have confronted Rhaegar, had Catelyn not restrained him.

Confrontation and Trial by Combat

Briefly after the Tourney, news arrived that Lyanna had been kidnapped by Rhaegar. The news hit Brandon hard, and in his grief and righteous anger, he and his companions raced to King’s Landing. With Elbert Arryn, Jeffory Mallister, Kyle Royce, and Ethan Glover, Brandon rode to the city gates, demanding to see Rhaegar and deliver a harsh demand. However, Rhaegar was nowhere to be found. Instead, King Aerys II arrested Brandon and his companions. In the searing heat of King’s landing, Lord Rickard Stark arrived, demanding a trial by combat.

The trial by combat was a dangerous game. As stated, Aerys II named wildfire as his champion, while Brandon himself was to serve as his own champion. However, when narrated in the 'Wildfire' of Aerys' rage, a device was placed around Brandon's neck, and he could not reach the sword to save his father. The end was swift, as Brandon was strangled and his father was left to die in his own armor, roasted by the flames of wildfire. His death shook the family and the realm.

Legacy and Burial

Despite never officially becoming the Lord of Winterfell, Brandon was laid to rest in the Ancient crypts of Winterfell with a statue. This act symbolized his enduring legacy and the importance placed on his memory by his family.

Brandon Stark was more than just a figure in House Stark's lineage; his life and death were significant markers of the political and social customs of his era. His story is a poignant reminder of the battles fought not only on the battlefields but also in the corridors of power.
