The Hypothetical Scenario: Would Feanor Have Made More Silmarils?

What if Feanor, the greatest jeweler of the Elder Days, had decided to create 20 Silmarils—2 for each of his sons, 3 for himself, and 1 for Finwe, Fingolfin, and Finnarfin? Would Morgoth still have stolen them?

There are several points to consider in this scenario. First, it is worth noting that Feanor was never overly fond of his family. These Silmarils were made by accident and, according to Feanor himself, he couldn't replicate the success of their creation. This was further confirmed by the Valar, who acknowledged that not even they could duplicate Feanor's work. Given these facts, the idea of Feanor creating 20 Silmarils—let alone successfully duplicating their unique properties—is highly improbable.

Why Feanor Couldn't Duplicate the Silmarils

As noted in the original source, Feanor himself stated that he made the Silmarils by experimentation and by mere accident, and he could not replicate them. The Valar also confirmed that they themselves could not copy his work. For this reason, it is doubtful that even if Feanor was capable of making more Silmarils, they would retain their special properties if there were more than three and if anyone could obtain them.

Feanor's Relationship with His Brothers and Half-Brothers

Furthermore, it is important to consider Feanor's longstanding feud with his half-brothers, as well as the animosity he harbored towards their descendants. Feanor had no love for his brothers, and he would not share the fruit of his labor with them or their offspring. The familial tension between them was too great, stemming from more than just familial hatred.

The Unlikely Outcome

In this highly unlikely scenario, where Feanor managed to create these additional Silmarils, the outcome would still have been the same: Morgoth would still desire the Silmarils and would eliminate anyone who stood in his way to obtaining them.

Considering the unique and singular nature of the Silmarils, the theft by Morgoth would have been inevitable, regardless of the number created. The Silmarils held immense power and significance in the legends of Middle-earth, making them a prize worth any sacrifice.

Therefore, even if Feanor had managed to create 20 Silmarils, they would still have faced the ultimate fate at the hands of Morgoth, driven by his desire for power and destruction.
