The Factors Influencing My Decision to Write Science Fiction

Ever since I was a child, writing has been an inherent part of my life, fuelled by my passionate interest in science and the freedom to explore imaginative realms. My writing journey started with simple fantasies in childhood, evolving over the years into a deep dive into the genre of science fiction. In this article, I explore the factors that have influenced my decision to write science fiction, my background as both a scientist and a writer, and the challenges and rewards of pursuing this creative path.

Early Influences and Fascination with Science Fiction

As an all-purpose nerd from early on, my affinity for science-fiction narratives was a natural progression from my deep curiosity about the world and the unknown. I have written a variety of stories ranging from indigenous shaman battles to astronomical adventures with vampires and werewolves. Despite this diversity, my fascination lies in the seamless blend of science with speculative scenarios, even if it involves questionable possibilities like time travel or faster-than-light (FTL) travel.

I can proudly say that I was accepted into the realm of published science fiction. My story “Squish” was included in the anthology The Best of Jim Baens Universe vol. 2, though I stopped using that pen name. This early recognition has been a significant pillar in my journey of affirming my passion for the genre. Since then, I have produced my own stories and sagas that delve into the intricacies of human nature and the expansion of our knowledge.

Early Attempts and Inspiration

My first foray into writing science fiction dates back to my school days, as early as the third grade. While my early attempts were modest, they laid the foundation for what was to come later. It wasn’t until I was writing my doctoral dissertation that I seriously took up the craft. With a burning desire to harmonize scientific research and creative storytelling, I made the bold decision to embark on writing a novel in tandem with my academic work.

The idea of juggling these two demanding tasks was tempting, but the deep passion for storytelling was too strong to resist. I eventually realized that sacrificing the novel for the dissertation would result in a lifelong regret, and thus, I made a tough but decisive choice. This decision led to the completion of my dissertation and a later return to the world of science fiction through the creation of the The Loose Ends Saga.

My Academic and Creative Background

My path to becoming a scientist was one filled with diligent study and a profound dedication to the pursuit of truth. However, my love for storytelling has been equally strong. Growing up, I knew of my family’s rich tradition of writing, and it became clear to me that my talents and interests would diverge in these two directions. The choice wasn’t a matter of dignity or modesty; rather, it was a matter of personal fulfillment.

Despite my passion for science, I have always believed that the disciplined pursuit of truth is a higher calling than storytelling. Yet, society often recognizes and compensates the latter more highly. I have always been rewarded more generously for my work as a novelist than for my contributions to scientific research. This reality has often pushed me to question my priorities, as my hobby threatened to become my career at times.

The decision to prioritize storytelling over research was not an easy one. It involved a deep internal conflict between my love for science and my talent for fiction. I often pondered the ease of art in comparison to the arduousness of scientific labor. The realization that I was better at creating vivid stories than conducting rigorous research in a lab was a defining moment in my career choice.

Challenges and Rewards of Writing Science Fiction

The challenges of writing science fiction are manifold. Producing a compelling narrative that balances scientific accuracy with imaginative freedom is no small task. The need for research and fact-checking is constant, requiring a blend of creativity and diligence. The emotional and mental labor involved in creating a fully realized world can be draining, but the rewards are immensely satisfying.

Writing offers a unique outlet where I can explore complex themes, characters, and settings. It allows me to engage with readers and share my thoughts on the universe, life, and our future. Despite the challenges, the joy of storytelling remains unripened, and I continue to seek new ways to express my ideas through the written word.
