The Eccentric Professor: A Haunting Encounter with Father Trabold
The Eccentric Professor: A Haunting Encounter with Father Trabold
When one thinks of eccentric professors, the imagery that often comes to mind is that of a quirky and unconventional teacher. These professors might engage in unconventional teaching methods, use humor extensively, or have unique perspectives. However, not all eccentric professors are what they seem on the surface. Some, such as the renowned paranormal researcher and exorcist, Father Alphonsus Trabold, are the epitome of eccentricity and gentleness wrapped into one.
A hoot and a fortnight
During my time as a student at St. Bonaventure University, one professor certainly stood out for his eccentricity and his unfathomable knowledge of the paranormal. Unlike many other professors, he was not intimidating, despite his imposing appearance. His unconventional teaching methods and his focus on psychical research made him a popular choice among students.
Two famous figures in the field of paranormal research, Edward and Lorraine Warren, were renowned for their investigations into some of the most terrifying and famous cases, such as the Amityville Horror, The Conjuring, and The Hinsdale House.
Philosophy of Love and Sex, and Psychical Research and Nature
Among the numerous courses I had, the most fascinating was Trabold's 'Psychical Research and Nature' class. This class was an exploration into all things paranormal, covering topics such as telekinesis, psychokinesis (the ability to move objects without touching them), telepathy, ESP, poltergeists, Ouija boards, and even diabolical hauntings. Every class had a waiting list, and Trabold would reserve the front row seats for his 'paranormal friends,' a nod to the somber reality that his deceased friends couldn't attend.
During one class, the door would inexplicably swing open and close. Trabold would welcome the "classroom visitors," which added an eerie, almost supernatural atmosphere. This made his classes more than just quirky; they were truly unforgettable.
The Hinsdale House: A Haunted Location
One day, a student asked Trabold about the Hinsdale House, a well-known and reportedly haunted location in the area. Trabold, known for his cheery disposition, took a serious turn and warned the student to never attempt to find the house, as there were forces they should not mess with. This advice, combined with the local lore, made me more curious to learn about the history of the Hinsdale House.
The Hinsdale House's history dates back to the 1970s, when Phil and Claire Dandy purchased the home and encountered evil entities. The home and surrounding area are epicenters for paranormal activity, including inexplicable burns, strange temperatures, bizarre occurrences, and apparitions of a ghost car. In 1974, the house was cleansed by the quirky Father Trabold, showcasing his genuine and somewhat mysterious approach to exorcism.
A Case Study in Exorcism
One of Trabold's case studies involved a young woman in her 20s who claimed to have sold herself to the devil. She was agitated and wanted revenge on a family member. After an hour of intense commands and holy water sprinkling, the demon eventually left, and the woman herself felt happy for the first time in years.
Another intriguing experience Trabold shared involved a homeowner whose broom followed him around the house. The homeowner eventually rid the house of the broom, only for it to reappear. Further exorcism was necessary to resolve the issue.
While Trabold respected the Warrens' work in paranormal research, he felt their focus was too commercial. He believed that his work was primarily about helping people, whereas the Warrens' primary goal was to prove the existence of entities and demons through their investigations. Trabold's approach was more focused on providing genuine help rather than seeking commercial gain.
Despite his eccentric nature, Trabold was a deeply respected person, and he passed away in 2005. His legacy lives on through the numerous students who were fortunate enough to be part of his intriguing and unconventional classes.
