The Aftermath of Sauron's Fall: The Transformation of Minas Morgul

Following the destruction of the One Ring, the city of Minas Morgul, once tainted by the dark magic of Sauron, underwent a significant transformation. This transformation marked not only a physical cleansing but also a spiritual renewal, leading to a new era for Gondor.

The Cleansing of Minas Morgul

Once known as Minas Morgul, the city that served as Sauron's primary stronghold, was eventually cleansed of the evil influence that had long plagued it. By the time of its transformation, it had been reclaimed and renamed to its original name, Minas Ithil. This change was symbollic of the city's rebirth and the restoration of its former glory.

A crucial moment in the history of Minas Ithil was when Faramir and éowyn met in the House of Healing in Minas Tirith during their convalescence. Their meeting held great significance, as both were central figures in the war against Sauron. Later, they were made the Lord and Lady of Minas Ithil by Aragorn, the future King of Gondor.

The Destruction of Structures

Unlike other structures that were built using Sauron’s personal power, such as Barad-d?r and the Morannon, Minas Morgul was not entirely destroyed when the Ruling Ring was destroyed. However, the loathsome influence of the Nazg?l’s occupation for over a millennium left the land both physically and spiritually poisoned. This legacy required comprehensive measures to be addressed.

King Elessar, the future King Aragorn, recognized this and ordered the obliteration of all remaining structures in the Morgul Vale. This directive was carried out by estafiers and military forces, leaving Minas Morgul abandoned and in ruin. The chapter 'The Steward and the King' in The Two Towers details this event, highlighting the extensive damage control efforts.

The Future of Morgul Vale

After the destruction of the city, the land around it was considered cursed, and it would take many lifetimes for it to heal. Aragorn expressed his intention to have Minas Morgul utterly destroyed, even going so far as to leave orders for the city to be torn down after the evil had dissipated.

Both Aragorn and Gandalf warned that while the land might eventually become wholesome again, no man could live there for many long years. This proclamation underscored the lasting impact of Sauron's influence on the region. Aragorn specifically mentioned his plans to leave orders for the destruction, indicating a long-term policy to ensure the area remained uninhabitable to further protect against the resurgence of evil.

A Symbol of a Toxic Waste Dump

The destruction of Minas Morgul served as a powerful symbol for Gondor. It was an act of leaving the past behind and ensuring that the dangers of the past were not repeated. In essence, the city of Minas Morgul became a Middle-earth version of a toxic waste dump, permanently severed from the political and cultural landscape of the region.

While the exact timing and process of the destruction are not clearly defined in the texts, the intention and outcome are clear. Minas Ithil was to be a place of memory, a symbol of the power of light and the ultimate victory of good over evil.
