Reflections on Classic TV and the Role of News in Our Times
Do you remember the old TV programs? I used to work on one! Comparatively, I found it more practical to focus on stories that matter, rather than reporting everything that didn't break. One show that comes to mind is Hee Haw.
Well, I had a peculiar crush on Buck Owens, which passed quickly. Regarding the lines you mentioned, I didn't take them too seriously. Only in a humorous sense. At twenty, and likely quite unsophisticated, I viewed the world through a different lens. Now, I categorize news, songs, poems, and memes based on how I envision an ideal future. However, I understand that these are depressing times, and the future doesn't look rosy. Yet, there is still hope. If humans unite as one planet, working toward a common goal, future generations can thrive.
For a while, my main concern was a widespread ignorance that affects almost everyone, with only a few exceptions. The concern is further exacerbated by a social structure dominated by male superiority and a disconnect from scientific and rational thought. Many believe in something that can't be proven, based on personal preference or a sense of ownership over parts of the earth. This misplaced trust undermines the progress humanity needs.
This destructive ignorance does not affect only humans; it also impacts non-human sentients, like earthworms, who live in harmony with nature. However, humans are different. Our destructive tendencies could lead to our own extinction. As a collective, we need to work towards a future where ignorance is not the dominant force.
One of the memorable quotes from those old shows was, “If it werent for bad luck, Id have no luck at all.” Sadly, bad news sells. This is why the news media has plenty of airtime to fill with criticisms, experts, and commentary. Reporters often voice opinions instead of providing facts. This bombardment of negative news can be overwhelming and depressing. However, you can limit your exposure. Fill your time with positivity by reading, watching comedy, or listening to uplifting music.
In conclusion, while classic TV shows and news media play significant roles in shaping our perceptions, it is essential to maintain a balanced perspective. We must strive to unite and work towards a future devoid of ignorance and division. Only then can we ensure a better tomorrow for all.
