Parental Guidance and Substance Experimentation
Is it Better to Let Your Kids Drink or Smoke with You First or on Their Own?
Introduction
As a retired high school guidance counselor and the husband of a licensed Registered Nurse, my professional and personal views suggest that exposing children to substances like alcohol or tobacco, whether with or without supervision, is not advisable. Here, I discuss the reasons for this position, drawing from both personal and professional experience.
Health Risks and Legal Considerations
The health risks associated with smoking any form of tobacco or marijuana are well-documented and include exposure to toxins that can harm a young person's physical and cognitive development. Alcohol consumption, particularly in minors, can also stunt growth and negatively impact brain development. Despite this, some may argue that experimenting with substances in a controlled environment with parents present could be beneficial. However, it is important to note that there are legal restrictions and social pressures that come with such practices, which can lead to harmful consequences.
Personal Experience
My most peaceful experience with substances involved my mother, who let me experience her marijuana use. Afterward, I found comfort in cuddling with her, sucking my thumb, and sleeping. There was no risk of sexual misconduct, and no gossip or negative interactions to contend with. This safe and supportive environment allowed me to approach substances with a sense of security rather than fear or manipulation.
Guidance for Parents
It is crucial for parents to model healthy behaviors and to understand the potential risks associated with substances. Allowing children to experiment with alcohol, especially when they are old enough to be curious, can actually demystify it. Many parents responsibly introduce their teenagers to small amounts of wine or other adult beverages, helping to reduce the likelihood of binge drinking later on. However, smoking, whether it's cigarettes, vaping, or marijuana, should never be encouraged. All forms of tobacco are highly addictive and can lead to serious health issues over time.
Conclusion and Prayers
Encourage your children to experiment on their own, recognizing that they will eventually grow out of the phase where they want to experience things with their parents. Supervising teenagers can be challenging, but it is crucial for ensuring their safety and well-being. Regular prayer for their safety and thankfulness to God for their current responsible adult status can provide immense comfort and peace. Remember, making it to adulthood without harmful experiences is a significant achievement and one worthy of celebration.
