Overcoming Barriers: My Journey to Embrace My LGBTQ Identity
Behind the mask of societal expectations, I stumbled upon the truth about my self-identity. My journey to embracing my LGBTQ identity has been a series of awakenings, realizations, and sometimes, heartaches. This article shares my story, from the internal strife to the eventual acceptance and triumph of standing as I am.
A Semester of Struggle and Self-Awareness
Every morning when I looked into the mirror, I could not stand to see the reflection. As I gradually realized that I was a girl at heart, I finally decided to come out as transgender during my senior year. The process was not easy, but the realization that I loved myself for who I am allowed me to gain immense strength.
My journey to realizing that it is not about gender, but personality, took a long time. I also identified as pansexual, which meant that I did not care about a person's gender identity but rather their personality. It was a complex realization, one that required a lot of introspection and self-discovery. However, the act of acknowledging and embracing my true self eventually brought me a great deal of personal growth and happiness.
Facing Challenges and Choosing Self-Expression
Our journey to self-acceptance is fraught with challenges. When I came out to my family as pansexual, it was due to the person I was dating. At that time, that person’s identity had evolved dramatically, from identifying as a cisgender man to now identifying as a trans woman. Despite the misgivings, I was ultimately determined to correctly identify my gender and began the process of misgendering them no longer felt right at home.
Unfortunately, coming out to family while being in a relationship with a person of the same gender was not easy. However, once I had gone through the process, it allowed me to open doors of communication and acceptance.
During my national service in the RAF, keeping a low profile regarding my sexual orientation was almost mandatory. The fear of legal repercussions and discrimination kept me from being open about my identity. Yet, once I transitioned to the private sector, I made a conscious decision to no longer hide my true nature. I decided that I would not avoid the issue by being careful with my words; rather, I would be honest with everyone, including myself. When I moved to a new job, I chose to be true to who I am. I made no attempt to conceal my true self, and the change brought me no trouble.
A Legacy of Truth and Equality
Finally, I came out as gay to an employer during my time at a temporary job in the civil service. The need for a security clearance was the catalyst for coming out. I spoke directly to the head of my department, warning him that my sexuality might be a factor in my eligibility for a permanent position. Thankfully, the security people did not object and I was offered a permanent post.
My journey to self-acceptance and embracing my LGBTQ identity is not a simple tale of triumph. It is a narrative filled with the pain of self-discovery, the fear of societal rejection, and the naivety of youth. However, it is a story worth telling, as it reflects the resilience and strength of the LGBTQ community. It is a story of self-acceptance, honesty, and the journey towards a future where everyone can be true to themselves.
