How to Aspire to be as Good a Writer as Deepak Mehta
Thanks to OP for the compliment. To be honest, I view myself as a merely decent writer. There are many more accomplished teachers, critics, storytellers, and overall contributors around whose work Deepak Mehta stands out. Their contributions continually inspire me.
I started contributing around 2013. That’s almost four years and likely a bit more. The secret to improving in anything lies in persistence. Over these four years, I have contributed over 2,400 answers and 1,400 posts. This amounts to approximately two and a half articles per day. Occasionally, I revisit old answers, finding a noticeable improvement in writing quality. Thus, I believe I have grown and refined my writing over my time here.
There are no tricks or shortcuts. You simply begin one day, with a single answer. Then, a few more follow.
Improving Your Writing
Read extensively from writers better than you. Observe how they craft their thoughts into coherent sentences and paragraphs. Learn new words and pick up novel narrative techniques. Find alternative ways to present your arguments.
Leverage technology and resources to enhance your writing. Set up a blog centered on a theme. Whether the goal is to share knowledge, learn about a new topic, or both, a blog can be an invaluable tool.
Imitating and Innovating
Adopt writing tips from renowned authors but, importantly, carve your own niche. What differentiates great writing is the unique voice and perspective. To quote Quentin Tarantino, 'You can criticize everything that Quentin does, but nobody writes Tarantino stuff like Tarantino. He is the best Tarantino writer there is and that was actually the thing that people responded to—this is an individual writing with his own point of view.'
While there are undoubtedly better writers out there, smarter ones, and those who plot better, the unique ‘you’ is irreplaceable.
Final Thoughts
The path to becoming a better writer is not a shortcut but a journey of consistent effort and dedication. Embrace the feedback, refine your style, and always stay true to your unique voice. If you continue to grow and refine your craft, you too can aspire to be as good a writer as Deepak Mehta—or even surpass him.
