Childhood Snacks and Adult Weight: A Personal Journey Through Junk and Healthy Foods

Throughout my childhood, the snacks I enjoyed often fell under the category of what could be considered junk food today. These snacks, some delicious and some not-so-much, played a significant role in shaping my eating habits and, consequently, my adult weight.

My Childhood Snack Preferences

From a young age, my snack choices were diverse and often indulgent. My choices included biscuits, cakes, canned fruits, candies, chips, dry cereal drink powder, bubblegum, and my personal favorites, crushed instant noodle snacks. While I occasionally enjoyed sweet beverages, my overall daily consumption was limited by the small amount of pocket money I had. Does this childhood diet have a significant impact on my adult weight? The answer isn’t straightforward, but my current weight and diet suggest a more nuanced understanding.

Prevalence of Junk Food in My Childhood

The closest junk food I could consume during my youth were Lance Nabs and Jack’s Cookies. Beverages were 5 cents each, and Nabs were a nickel, while cookies were a penny. Considering the scarcity of money and the value of each item, we rarely indulged excessively. My heaviest weight was 260 pounds, a number that seemed manageable despite my height of 6 feet 2 inches. Within the past decade, I managed to drop to my current adult weight of 225 to 230 pounds, which feels the most comfortable.

My tendency to reject junk foods and fast foods in favor of cooking fresh meals is rooted in the realization that homemade meals are not only more tasty but also healthier.

Healthy Choices in Childhood

In addition to the junk food, I also consumed healthier snacks such as raisins, juice, and fresh fruits like apples and bananas. Occasionally, we had figs, loquats, apricots, peaches, and quinces grown in our backyard. Despite these healthier options, I experienced weight gain during puberty, which led to more significant weight gain when I started dieting.

My mother attributed my weight gain during puberty to eating meat. Prior to that, my diet consisted primarily of fruits and vegetables. However, my diet has continued to include meat when budget permits. Whether this diet change had any impact on my weight gain, I personally blame the yo-yo dieting I endured. By the time I was in my 20s, I had become morbidly obese, and this condition persists to this day.

The Role of My Mother and Childhood Environment

My mother was quite strict about our consumption of sugar cereals and desserts, especially if she wasn't present. It’s amusing to think that we were supposed to behave well but then got hopped up on sugar. Growing up, my siblings and I had eating disorders, and even though I had a high metabolism, my weight seems to stabilize at a chubby level since having children and falling ill. My daughter kindly describes a squishy grandma as the best kind.

My neighbors from childhood had a similar upbringing. They too had limited TV and candy, yet as soon as they began watching other people (like me), their first desires were for candy and TV. Over time, I lost touch with them, and I wonder what their current eating habits are like.

Reflecting on my personal journey, the impact of childhood snack choices on adult weight is multifaceted. While many factors contribute to our dietary habits and weight, the choices we make and the environment in which we raise our children play critical roles.
