A Lifelong Journey of Reading: Estimating the Number of Novels Read
As a avid reader, the question of how many novels one has read often lingers. Join us on a journey into my personal reading history, where numbers tell the story of years spent between the pages of books.
Early Beginnings
My journey as a reader began in my second grade, when my dad introduced me to the enchanting world of novels. My first novel, Famous Five - Five on a Treasure Island by Enid Blyton, marked the start of a lifelong passion. Initially, I was more inclined towards encyclopedias, finding them reliable sources of information. However, my reluctance didn’t last long as I became captivated by the adventures and mysteries woven into each page.
Expanding Horizons
Subsequently, I delved into series like the Malory Towers and The Magic Faraway Tree, both by Enid Blyton. The Goosebumps series by R.L. Stine soon followed, capturing the imaginations of millions. Over the years, I expanded my reading to include Roald Dahl’s works and many other classics. My best friend in elementary school would bring an autobiography of famous individuals, which we enjoyed reading together each week.
Consistent Reading
Being a bookworm, my teachers couldn’t help but complain to my mother about me racing ahead in class. Reading quickly became my favorite hobby, and I read across a variety of genres, with the exception of crime and mystery. Currently, I am engrossed in a novel titled Lanka’s Princess by Kavita Kane, a fascinating exploration of mythology from a woman's perspective.
Recent Reading Habits
Over the past year, I must have read about 30 novels, not counting the serials I read online. This seems slow, but my work and Quora activities have kept me busy. My yearly reading average is around 50 books or 30 novels. Years ago, I was reading closer to 100 books a year and 90 novels, primarily due to a relentless passion for books.
Estimating the Total
Given this pattern, I estimate that I have read between 2,300 and 2,500 novels in my lifetime. While I haven't kept a precise tally of each book I've read, my Kindle, acquired two years ago, confirms I have "finished" over 467 books in my "finished" folder.
I recall finishing a novel every two days or less, typically while commuting or during lunch breaks at work. While nonfiction is my favorite genre, novels have undoubtedly played a significant role in my reading life.
